Do you hate the UMPCs?

Well I don’t. The concept is great and we just need few more choices, better battery life, faster processors and ofcourse lower price.

If you think you are one of them who hates the UMPC, Tom’s hardware guide has an article where he explains why does everyone (???) hate (!) Ultra-Mobile PC. Looks like Tom does hate the UMPC, but Dick and Harry might love it.
Again it’s the products that we hate because of the price, performance and various other factors - not the concept, If Intel were to sell their sliding prototype say at $700; I don’t see a reason, why someone would hate it.

A slow week for the UMPC

As we have noticed, there is not much happening with the UMPCs. There is no update on exactly when the Asus R2H will hit the market, neither the Averatec. But few things happened that need to be noted.

  • Intel sold off their mobile chips (x-scale) to Marvell Technology group for $600m - read on
  • After using the Samsung Q1 for one full month, Wildman says he likes the UMPC but not Samsung Q1. - read on
  • CTitanic has released a new game made just for the UMPCs “iHangMan” - read on
  • Though not an UMPC, Sony’s upgraded to Flash Memory for Micro PC the UX series.

Asus, Please give us more details.

Remember the Dell UMPC

Remember the Dell UMPC mockup that one of our readers sent us way back? Later Ultranauts had a posting on the Dell entering the UMPC market on the April 1st (yes April 1st). Now Ultranauts seems to have some insider information on Dell entering in to the UMPC arena.

Bottom-line? A Dell UMPC is officially on the drawing board and slated for release within the next 12 months. Not many specifics, but the designers are looking to differentiate from the pack with a design that is “indicative of the one shown in the promotional videos where the screen ‘turns out’ to reveal a keyboard. Dell is apparently working to create a device that “appears as small as possible. I don’t know what “appears as small as possible actually means, but I would imagine it has to do with a small screen bezels and very rounded corners/edges…

Not just that, Tabletkiosk (according to Ultranauts) might be releasing a major update to its line of eo within the next 2 months.

UMPC? Sorry, We don’t carry it.

I was so exicted about the availability of Samsung Q1 in Fry’s Electronics. This would be the very first time that I personally would be laying my hands on a UMPC.

Samsung should have gone for a launch training(of some sort) to all the Fry’s Stores. I don’t want to blame Fry’s or anything. I wanted to pick up a Samsung Q1 from Fry’s Electronics. When I asked the Mobile Section Manager - “Hey, I’m lookin for the Samsung Q1 UMPC - Do you know where i can find ‘em?” he goes “UMPC? Sorry we don’t carry it”.

It took me few minutes to explain to him that all the 32 Fry’s Stores were to have this according to Samsung and had to explain how the device looks like and explain it in detail; then he goes “Oh! that small computer thing without a Keyboard! Yes it’s over there”

Hop on Q1, Let’s go for a drive!
