in Asus, Hardware and Specs.
Just came across the article on jkOnTheRun that Asus might be coming out with Intel Core Duo, but we wondered why the specualtion when ASUS seems to have promised it already. Well Asus has not yet announced a clear spec anyways.
When the WinHEC was held, Asus had a stall and they had displayed the R2H, Cisco Cheng - PC Magazine reported on ABC news on May 25th that….
…Samsung proudly displayed their Hybrid hard drive, consisting of both a flash component and a disk component. The hard drive will be used in conjunction with Windows
ReadyDrive, allowing these hybrids to drive performance and increase notebook battery life. ReadyDrive caches information a lot quicker by using flash memory. You can literally launch applications within seconds, as opposed to longer wait times using the spinning component.
Finally, I passed by the Asus booth where I saw the company’s own lackluster UMPC. Like the Samsung Q1, the Asus UMPC neither has a built-in keyboard nor a built-in optical drive. Asus is listing it with an Intel Core Duo processor, which is a lot faster than the 900Mhz Celeron, and it also has built-in GPS, as opposed to an optional CF card GPS device on the Samsung Q1. You’ll also notice a built-in Web cam and a fingerprint reader. The R2H is loaded with Windows Tablet OS edition and weighs less than 2 pounds. No word on pricing yet [...]

Kevin [jkOnTheRun] has an interesting article about the batter discharge of the Samsung Q1 and the P7.
I noticed the other day that Carrypad listed the battery discharge rates of the Paceblade P7 UMPC in their review, so I promptly downloaded the same application they used and gave it a whirl on the Samsung Q1. If you’re interested, the software is called Notebook Hardware Control and it’s actually very useful for any notebook computer, not to mention it’s free.
WiFi off, screen brightness at 50%:
- P7 = 11.3 Watts for a runtime of 2.3 hours
- Q1 = 10.0 Watts for a runtime of 2.9 hours
WiFi off, screen brightness at 100%:
- P7 = 11.9 Watts for a runtime of 2.18 hours
- Q1 = 10.8 Watts for a runtime of 2.68 hours
WiFi off, screen brightness at minimum:
- P7 = 8.1 Watts for a runtime of 3.2 hours
- Q1 = 8.7 Watts for a runtime of 3.3 hours
USB devices disabled (through windows hardware control – disables Bluetooth and wifi) screen min:
- P7 = 7.37 Watts for a runtime of 3.52 hours
- Q1 = 8.3 Watts for a runtime of 3.49 hours

in Hardware and Sony.
Well we’ve heard and read a lot about the Sony Vaio UX Series, but this is not about that, UMPC News has discoverd the new FCC approval for a new look alike device which it states might fall under the UMPC category.
A new model of Sony VAIO PCG-1J1L and 1K1L handheld PC has been approved by the FCC.
Unfortunately the user manual and pictures of this PC are not disclosed yet, but from what I was able to put together from the label info, picture and test reports that are available, it looks like a good candidate for the UMPC category
This is definetely not the Sony Vaio UX model announced last week. The label ID clearly states that it is VAIO PCG model, and Vaio UX50 and 90 come with VGN prefix. Also even if we can only see the back side of this computer it doesn’t look like UX - the sides are not symmetrical [..]
More interesting we found this letter from Sony to the FCC not to disclose the photos and the User Manual… mmm let’s wait and see what they have for us!

Oh No, All we have today is the Samsung Q1 and the Tablet Kiosk and out of which only samsung was officially announced at the CeBIT and we’ve been eagerly waiting for the Asus R2H and the Founder Mini-Note and looks like the Asus is delayed until August.
Personally i was waiting for the Asus, thinking it would be the one that has a metal casing and sleek. Digital Lifestlye reports that it would be delayed until august.
According to Alvin Chou, ASUS’s Product Manager, “The performance and reliability of the machines, particularly in boosting the gaming experience and battery life, are being maximized to offer users a much better overall experience.” Also, ASUS is reportedly trying to up the machine’s specifications before the launch, giving users more bang for their buck and making the R2H a much more attractive option to consumers [...]

Game Industry reports that Bill Gates in a conference yesterday made it clear that microsoft will be setting its focus more on teh mobile devices. So can we expect the UMPC to double as the Xbox Portable or is that going to be something different ?
Speaking at a conference organised by the Wall Street Journal in California yesterday, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has made comments implying that the firm may be preparing new initiatives in the portable device space.
“We are looking at various ways to bring more to that space,” he commented in response to questioning about a possible portable media device, according to a report published by ZDNet. “There is a lot yet that hasn’t been done.”
However, his direct response to the question - which focused on the portable system that J Allard is allegedly working on with the Xbox team, according to journalist and author Dean Takahashi - was simply that “I have no announcement to make today.” [...]
