Linux on the Q1

There were few, who tried to install vista on the UMPC and were successful to some extend. James point us to a blog where this guy “carsten” has installed linux on the Samsung Q1 and he also explains the full process to us, covering…

  • Basic Installation - preparations
  • Wireless LAN
  • Graphical Interface
  • Last but not least: The Touchscreen
  • The Show Stoppers or What do I need, to use Linux on this gadget as default?
  • What I Didn’t Do
  • The Future

The Only major downside being the fact that the touchscreen could not be used to its full, there is no handwriting recognition tool available for a Linux (yet!).

UPDATE: Steve over at Carrypad has an article on how UMPC devices (he strongly believes Sony’s UX series to be an UMPC) will become popular.

Slowly but surely, UMPC owners are trying Linux on their devices. First we saw John Tokash succesfuly boot Damn Small Linux on the eo/easybook/t700 and we even had some success ourselves with it on the Easybook P7. Then we saw Mozy.org report success with Linux on the Sony UX series and now, Linux on the Samsung Q1. But there are problems. Here we discuss some of the issues and put some questions to Sascha Pallenberg, founder and MD of the VIA-focused Linux distribution epiOS.

Dan writes an open letter to Microsoft

Dan writes on his blog, an open letter to Microsoft, Sure a lot of us would be feeling the same as himself…

Dear Microsoft,
writer.gif As a devout “early adopter” and self-proclaimed gadget nerd, I waited with enthusiasm for the UMPC’s release. Starting with the original Origami rumors and hype campaign, I followed every gadget blog and web forum for the inside scoop. When I saw the release specs and information, I was impressed with what I saw [...]

I had a Samsung Q1 in my hands at Fry’s Electronics a week ago. I played with it and thought of all the fun I could have with it. I would no longer need to carry the laptop on trips. I would no longer have to carry separate devices for web browsing, personal organizing, or portable media. It would do it all.

But why, then, did I not purchase it already? [...]

Daewoo releases Lucoms Solo M1

We’ve heard about this. The initial models like 830g UMPC is powered by an Intel Celeron 900 Mhz CPU, running on MS Windows XP Tablet Edition and ships with 512MB of DDR2 400 memory (max 1GB) and a built-in 30GB hard drive. Dimensions will be 25.5mm(W)x 114mm(D) x 25mm(H).

This unit should be the same as the founder mininote(both the case and the spec), personally I like the dock on this, really cool.

The Solo M1 features a variety of multimedia features, including video and music playback via Windows Media player, a DMB tuner, a 1.3 MP webcam for video conferencing and a 4-in-1 (MMC/ SDIO/ MS/ MS Pro) memory card reader.
