Flipstart was one of the earliest prototypes for UMPCs. They demonstrated something of UMPC sort back in 2004. Time magazine had an article about this a few weeks back. The company was founded by Paul Allen. Today CNET has reviewed the unit.

So what does the review say:
The good: Decent performance; includes touch pad; handy shortcut keys; design suited for tabletop or handheld use.
The bad: Clunky, thick design; less-than-useful secondary display; not customizable, except for OS choice.
The bottom line: The most laptop-like UMPC seen to date, the clamshell Vulcan FlipStart E-1001S offers welcome features including a touch pad, but it’s still not the real-world practical UMPC we’ve been waiting for.

Medion’s RIM 1000 was expected to ship in February — the first to sport Vista and the Origami Experience pack. We heard about it being delayed and Gigabyte wanting to join the party. FCC has approved the device and it should be ready to ship soon in the US.

The initial specs did not have any GPS in it. Navigadget reports it has internal GPS module. Get the Medion RIM 1000 pdf manual here

Things are getting HOT at Intel Developer Forum at Beijing. ZDNet has some new stuff for all us

The all new prototype by Intel, thought this device kind of mimics the Sony UX and or the Averatec this seems to be running on their all new much speculated UMPC platform. Interestingly this is running Vista with Aero graphics (at least in the screen shot) and supposed to be having a batter life of 4.5 hours — Impressive!

You all will agree that the second generation of the UMPCs are much better than the first (the way it is supposed to be). So What do you think is the future of the UMPCs?
Take a look at this Video. I need one of these — any one out there ???
