Look out for the Fujitsu FMV-U8240 Review

I was really shocked to see that some one has got hold of the Fujitsu FMV-U8240 so soon, and this time its the guys from Akihabara. I guess that’s the advantage of being in Japan. They are going to have a review soon.

If you need one of these, get over to Dynamism and you can pre-order them. Not sure when Fujitsu is planning to bring it to the US Markets.

Media re-thinks the UMPC

It’s about a little more than a year since the launch of UMPC. We’ve seen varied reaction from consumers and media so far. The main stream media seems to be rethinking what they stated during the initial times of UMPC.

Walt Mossberg has reviewed (kind of an overview) the Samsung Q1 Ultra and states this is far better than the first generation of UMPCs. The article titled “This Time, Samsung Has Made a Tiny PC That’s Practical to Use“. Here is the video

GottabeMobile has posted yet another story including this on David DeJean of Information Week taking a complete “U” turn on the Origami concept with the article that goes “OK, So I Was Wrong About Origami“. It’s interesting to see how the hardware has improved & implications has changed drastically over in a years time.

But this is not last year’s Origami. Ultra-mobile PCs have come a long way in a short time. While the UMPC is still a long way from being an established category of PC hardware, designers have come up with interesting takes on small devices with most of the capabilities of a full-sized notebook PC…

Microsoft prepping UMPC 2.0

The first release of UMPC specifications were minimal and as things are getting more robust, the second version of UMPCs should be more powerful , slimmer and long lasting and ready for Vista. Though there are lots of UMPCs out there that support vista and some even with Aero, Microsoft seems to be getting ready with their next spec for UMPCs

… built-in QWERTY keyboard, 3-4 hrs battery life, 1GB of minimum Ram and less than 1.5 lbs

The second set of possible UMPC specifications under consideration calls for ultra-thin PCs that weigh less than 1.5 pounds, incorporate 5-inch or 7-inch displays .and are housed in an 18- to 20-mm footprint, executives said.

Potential features of the next-generation Origami design at the drawing board include an integrated QWERTY keyboard, a touch screen fully integrated into the LCD, at least 1 GB of memory, and battery life of between three and four hours, said Microsoft Vista development manager Vikram Madan, at the Windows Hardware Engineering conference…
