When Samsung launched their Q1 UMPC, personally I did not like the design, look and feel of it. This has changed with the Q2.
The design of the product looks very promising. Here are some of the improvements over the previous design
- Built in QWERTY keyboard without the sliding or opening of anything.
- HSDPA & WiBRO support
- They claim it’s around 1.5 lbs which is great & less than 1 inch.
- A standard battery that lasts for 4 hrs
- 6 hrs of battery life with the extended battery
- A built in camera
- and more accessories

We first sighted this device as the “Arima” and later Medion announced it and this was supposed to be the first UMPC to ship with Vista and was scheduled for Jan 30. Steve has posted that it might get further delayed.

Gigabyte seems to be readying their UMPC dubbed the “Gigabyte U60″ which looks same as the Medion/Arima (if this is what the product will look like). They are planning to launch it at CeBIT 2007.

Looks like some considerable number of UMPCs and tablet PCs has been stolen from the Tabletkiosk warehouse. Rob of GottabeMobile has noted that TabletKiosk is seeking the online community to give them tips if they spot something. Here is the mail from TabletKiosk
The Tablet PC and UMPC fan base is often referred to as a community. This is why I am reaching out to the online Tablet and UMPC fan base so that we can all respond in a unified front.
On Sunday, February 11, the TabletKiosk warehouse in Torrance, CA was robbed. The thieves stole a considerable number of Sahara Slate PCs, eo v7110s and eo v7210 units.
We are working with the police to catch the perpetrators and retrieve the stolen units and are exploring every possible avenue. This is why we are asking for assistance from the Tablet and UMPC community who often uncover significant information about Tablet PCs and UMPCs online.
The stolen units are both pre-configured and configured units as well as some customers’ personal machines.
If you find information about any eo UMPC or Sahara Slate PCs for sale which seem too good to be true, I would appreciate if you would send the information to my attention. A reward will be provided for the person who provides us with information leading to the culprit.

Remember when CNET announced the Worst Tech of 2006. Yes it’s time for the second generation to make it to the BEST list. Stuff TV names Top 10 most wanted products that were announced at CES and guess what Vistagami as they call (UMPCs with Vista) are the 2nd on the list.
Vistagami. The nickname for the next generation of Vista-powered UMPCs, we’re hoping the new OS, inclusion of slide-down keyboards and improved battery life will make them genuine laptop alternatives.

Here are some of the second generation of UMPCs. According to engadget — the Yahoo Go seems to be well designed done right, but there are many more that’s in the list.

The verdict? Vista on these new UMPCs coupled with the new Origami Experience UI is a big step in the right direction. The “Yahoo UMPC” reference design we saw at Intel’s IDF felt very solid in the hand, and features a well positioned thumbpad we found easy to use while holding the device two handed — a design which might have a chance of success if picked up by an OEM. Intel also has a few new reference designs under glass: a chubby, slim-screened slider and another perched in a fat brown media dock with integrated DVD and AV outs.
