Origami Experience™ - Improved Touchpack

Microsoft today announced the Origami Experience, yes a replacement for the existing Touchpack(only on Vista though)

origami_exp.jpg

The purpose of Origami Experience™ is to deliver a great device-like media interface on your UMPC. It also allows you to quickly access other applications on your UMPC such as Windows Switcher, Mobility Center, Wireless Connectivity and all your installed programs.

You’ll notice the User Interface (UI) is arranged with Music, Videos, Pictures and Programs. Since the launch of the first UMPC devices we’ve learned that people love using their UMPCs for web browsing and media playback. Fortunately the web browsing experience is pretty good on these already, in part thanks to IE 7. We felt to really create a great media experience though we should write an interface that has been completely designed from the UMPC and touch displays. As you can see in the screenshot above, all of the buttons are easily targeted with your finger.

The Origami team says it would be available for download on Jan 30, May be because that’s when Medion UMPC will be out.

  • Someone has done cool plugin to IE that would convert the youtube or Google videos in to Windows based formats to be played on a Zune. Now that does not limit us from using it on a UMPC, well though the UMPC has a full featured OS and a browser, you might not be online all the time, say when you are travelling. • Speaking of being connected while travelling, a company named Autonet Mobile has something cool, yes a mobile broadband connection in your car. Check it out

Next generation of UMPCs

Sure, we were expecting new UMPCs being announced duing the CES, and now CNET confirms that there will be a second generation of UMPCs that would be made public at CES. This time let’s hope for those ones that are

  • Priced right
  • Weighs light
  • Improved Batteries
  • and better specs

Even with some improvements over the course of 2006, the first Origami devices have had very limited appeal.

“They haven’t done very well,” said IDC analyst Richard Shim. Some of the ultramobile PCs even found their way onto a list of biggest tech disappointments of 2006.
