Imagine a UMPC that is 40% smaller in size with better and longer battery life. Yep! VIA seems to be making that possible with its next generation of its chipsets. We had some update on VX700 about 2 months back, now Asus had made an offcial announcement on this.
Via said it has released the Via VX700 chipset which is for Ultra Mobile PCs. According to Via, the VX700 will allow a reduction of UPMC sizes by 40 per cent. The chipset is coupled with Via’s C7-M and gives longer battery life - the chipset itself measures 35mm by 35mm.
Via will release the chipset to mass production this quarter. It includes Unichrome graphics, DDR-2 support, Via “Vinyl” audio, support for S-ATA II and P-ATA hard drives, six USB 2.0 ports and four PCI slots.

Great, Soon we can expect the Asus R2H in the market. Though we have heard a lot and seen pictures of the product, we might always find some hidden features and functionalities that we might have missed. For those curious ones, who can’t wait to get their hands on the R2H, go ahead, download the Product Manual and have fun.

Though all the manufacturers have their own line of accessories, the Foldable USB Keyboard from Asus looks interesting. “Port Bar” is something new, looks like Asus does not have a dock but this thing called the “port bar” and is more like your port replicator.
Yes, For those of you who have already bought the Q1 - sorry. From today Samsung announced that Q1 will get a Keyboard along with a carry case(pictured below) at no extra cost. Still not sure if this offer is valid in the US.

Samsung is bundling a plug-in keyboard with its pioneering Q1 ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), the company announced today. It fits into a folding case that can also carry the portable.
The ‘organiser bundle’, as the company calls it, is available now at £799 inc VAT – the same as the launch price of the machine without a keyboard.
Mark Jennings, Samsing’s UK notebook business manager, said: ‘The free organiser bundle and additional range of Q1 accessories, in particular our extended battery and power options, builds on consumer demand for flexibility and mobility in computing devices.’
He said sales of the Q1 had already exceeded expectations. The Q1 is the first ultra-mobile built to Microsoft Origami spec to be widely available in the shops. It has full Tablet PC functionality, which means it has viable handwriting recognition and can be used without a keyboard.
But the inclusion of one is a bonus for people who use the machine for heavy bouts of writing.
Via [Computer Active]
Via seems to be really focused on the UMPCs. We know Via for long but until their latest C7 they made it into low cost high performance category, which intel seems to be wondering about.
Wenchi Chen, president and CEO of VIA Technologies previewed the next generation of miniature PC platform (you know, he just means the UMPCs and may be the Sony UX Series) with the VIA CoreFusion processor platform series that combines a VIA C7-M mobile processor core with VIA’s upcoming VX700 mobile chipset.
As a processor plus core logic in a single, complete package, “John” will play an important role in maintaining the pace of miniaturization, especially in the mobile space, when it is launched later this year, according to Chen. Motherboards based on the VIA “John” platform are expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2006, said Chen.
Chen also stated that the company’s VIA C7-M mobile processor family can be benefited by growing demand for the convergence of notebooks and handhelds into new device categories such as Ultra-Mobile PCs (UMPCs), like those of partners TabletKiosk and PBJ, and PC phones, such as DualCor’s PC, which combines full PC functionality with a PDA and a phone in a ultra compact handheld form factor [...]
