So What exactly in an UMPC?

what_is_umpc.gifWe know its too late to ask this question, If you have been following various UMPC centric blogs, you know more.Vikram Madan, Software Development Manager at Microsoft, leading the development team that builds cool new experiences for the Windows Ultra-Mobile PC category started a blog.

Today the question is “what the @!#$ is a UMPC?” and he has summarized the UMPC to what we have been talking about for a long time.

…“Oy! So it’s just a smaller PC. What’s the big deal?” Wait. Don’t leave yet! J Yes, the Ultra-Mobile PC is a smaller PC. But this is a big deal – at least from the perspective of a deal you did not have before…

Get over there, and read all that he has to say, Not to mention the cartoons/ illustrations that accompany his postings are great too, like the one here.

Medion gets delayed & Gigabyte wants to join

We first sighted this device as the “Arima” and later Medion announced it and this was supposed to be the first UMPC to ship with Vista and was scheduled for Jan 30. Steve has posted that it might get further delayed.

Gigabyte seems to be readying their UMPC dubbed the “Gigabyte U60″ which looks same as the Medion/Arima (if this is what the product will look like). They are planning to launch it at CeBIT 2007.

Dual screen phones, why not laptops?

That’s exactly what these guys did, This could as well be done for the UMPC, may be it’s just a matter of time. Imagine having a laptop that is dual screen, no no not that Windows SideShow or dual screen thing. A real notebook/laptop that has only screens yes, 2 screens that you can touch, draw and type on. Won’t this be cool.
