According to some reliable sources, Yahoo and Intel are working together to bring in the next version of UMPC in 2007. It will be smaller, but not faster than current UMPCs.

Intel provided a sneak peek at one of the UMPCs planned to hit the market in 2007 - a Yahoo! branded mobile device - that packs a comprehensive feature set into a small form factor. Technical details were scarce, but the presentation and hints given by senior vice president Dadi Perlmutter indicate that this will be the UMPC Microsoft and Intel should have introduced earlier this year. According to the executive, the devices will not use Core 2 Duo processor, and “consume approximately half the power of today’s CPUs with approximately one-fourth the package size.”

Remember the rugged UMPC that we sited a few weeks back, yes here is another addition to that family from Black Diamond Advanced Technology named the “Switchback”. Though the keypad at the bottom of the device reminds us of Razr this device is packed with features.
Developed by Black Diamond Advanced Technology, the SwitchBack-PC offers the same flexibility and connectivity of commercially available UMPCs, but adds an advanced feature set that meets the unique demands of users working in harsh environments.
Designed to meet or exceed military specifications for shock, vibration, dust, moisture and extreme temperatures, the SwitchBack UMPC can truly withstand the abuse of extreme conditions in the field. Equipped with a sunlight viewable touch screen, the SwitchBack can be viewed outdoors in all lighting conditions.
The SwitchBack-PC brings the power of the desktop to a portable, rugged, handheld solution that weighs just three pounds. The first rugged UMPC to have a built-in thumb keyboard, the SwitchBack utilizes never before seen “Parallel Processing Capabilities” to power multiple Operating Systems including Windows XP in combination with Windows Mobile, Windows CE or Linux. Because of its unique parallel processing technology the SwitchBack is energy efficient and has an extended battery life multiple times that of other portable computers its size in low power mode.

There has already been a lot of people who have integrated the UMPC in to their cars. Now Intel shows off the new Streetdeck.

The StreetDeck in-car computer has been one of the better ways to navigate an escape from Morten Harket and his a-ha buddies ever since it was unveiled at CES this January, but now they’re packing in some nifty UMPC integration (including internet connection leeching), Yahoo! Music, location-based internet search and iPod support. If you haven’t managed to spot this thing before now, peep the screenshots after the break, or hit up one of those read links for a full breakdown of what Intel was showing off during their keynote yesterday.

The long rumoured and awaited zune is finally launched. Microsoft hasn’t announced pricing or availability for Zune.

Microsoft has been waiting for this moment for quite some time, and now the time has come. Apple had its day in the spotlight on Tuesday when it announced its 5.5G iPod, 2G iPod Nano and 2G iPod Shuffle, but Microsoft today is touting its new Zune Portable Media Player.
What was once known as “Project Argo” now has to start the long journey uphill to take on the dominant champ Cupertino, California. Details about the player really started coming to light last month when the Toshiba 1089 appeared on the FCC website (always a great source for upcoming products). From the documents, we gathered that Zune will feature a 30GB HDD, 802.11b/g wireless connectivity, an FM tuner, USB 2.0 interface and a massive 3″ LCD screen. Microsoft confirmed all of those specifications today and disclosed a few more for good measure….
Here is a video of Zune in action after the jump. Continue reading ‘Microsoft launches Zune’
