UMPC vs. MID — Intel has the answers

With so much similarities between the two, a lot of users were confused as to what are the things that keep them apart and at CES looks like Intel has the answers to them, though most of us could have speculated them here it is in their own words

UMPC

Business-class device for enterprise users

Runs a “heavy” OS like Vista

Optimized for office-use applications like Excel, Word, etc.

MID

Consumer-class lifestyle device

Runs a ‘lightweight” OS with quick startup like Linux

Optimized for things like media playback and web surfing

In 2009 (or so) Moorestown-based devices will be classed as MIDs only

Intel’s 1-watt CPU Promise

It’s the Computex trade show in Taipei, The VP of Intel promised to ship new chips by the second half of this year which will consume less than 1watt (0.75 to be exact) – Great so what would be the price?

Intel has announced a new dual-core notebook CPU that can run on less than one watt of power.

The Ultra-low Voltage Core Duo CPU will be on the market during the second half of this year, and will consume “a median average” of just 0.75 watts, the company said in a statement.

Speaking at the Computex trade show in Taipei today, Intel senior vice president Anand Chandrasekher said that HP, Dell and other vendors are already developing notebook PCs which will use the chip [...]

Chandrasekher also noted that the low-power chips are a perfect match for handheld PCs based on Microsoft’s Ultra Mobile PC platform specification.

Intel has been surprised by competition from Taiwanese chip maker VIA Technologies in this market. VIA’s low-power, low-cost C7-M CPU has found its way into handheld devices like the PaceBlade Easy Book E7 [...]

Microsoft to focus more on the Portable devices

Game Industry reports that Bill Gates in a conference yesterday made it clear that microsoft will be setting its focus more on teh mobile devices. So can we expect the UMPC to double as the Xbox Portable or is that going to be something different ?

Speaking at a conference organised by the Wall Street Journal in California yesterday, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has made comments implying that the firm may be preparing new initiatives in the portable device space.

“We are looking at various ways to bring more to that space,” he commented in response to questioning about a possible portable media device, according to a report published by ZDNet. “There is a lot yet that hasn’t been done.”

However, his direct response to the question – which focused on the portable system that J Allard is allegedly working on with the Xbox team, according to journalist and author Dean Takahashi – was simply that “I have no announcement to make today.” [...]

Joint Venture: Pairs Riverdeep and Microsoft

Looks like Microsoft is targetting the Education field with UMPCs. It already has accepted DyKnow,a leader in interactive education technology based in indianapolis as one of their Early Adapter program for UMPC will fit in the education feild well. From the press release of business wire…

The joint education venture integrates the Riverdeep Learning Village(R) instructional portal and outstanding Destination Success(R) content and curriculum with Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to give educators and students greater online access to educational resources that can help children succeed in school…
