As the second generation of UMPCs are getting ready, this might be the first of the breed to start shipping. OQO announced their Model 2 in January at CES. Those who have pre-ordered the device, it will start shipping with Windows XP and for those who ordered it with Vista — you have to wait until sometime in April. Oh BTW have seen this scream if you drop it.

You all know about the motion sensors in some of the latest notebooks. The OQO has ‘em too. This gets interesting when they add a voice of a little girl screaming if they deduct a free fall, and the power light turns red.

The boy Genius got hold of the OQO Model 2 and have posted some unboxing pictures.

If there is one object of lust from the CES show I’d have to say it’s the newly announced OQO 2. Picking up where the previous models 01 and 01+ left off it adds new features, a fresh design and even more functionality. This is possibly the best UMPC portable computer out now. From the redesigned keyboard (which is now backlit!) to touch scroll bars (vertical and horizontal) to a built-in Sprint EV-DO modem it really kicks major arse. The performance is good, especially for just a small compact unit, very speedy and the zoom feature is great.

in OQO and Reviews and Specs.
The OQO Model 2 that was announced at CES last week get the first look and a short review at Laptop Magazine, Verdicts 4.5 out of 5.

[...] Although the 1.5-GHz Via C7M processor is certainly faster than the Transmeta CPU that crippled the OQO model 01, you shouldn’t expect to do more than run productivity apps on this device. The model 02’s performance numbers were low; its 69 score on MobileMark 2005 is less than half than what Sony UX delivered. On the other hand, the model 02 booted up faster than its predecessor, and it opened and closed apps faster.
We were quite pleased with the model 02’s four hours of battery life. To get that endurance, however, you’ll need the double-capacity battery ($199 and included in this configuration). Those who work in short spurts can get by with the standard battery, which lasted for 1 hour and 54 minutes in our tests [...]
