Vulcan Flipstart E1001S reviewed by CNET

Flipstart was one of the earliest prototypes for UMPCs. They demonstrated something of UMPC sort back in 2004. Time magazine had an article about this a few weeks back. The company was founded by Paul Allen. Today CNET has reviewed the unit.

So what does the review say:

The good: Decent performance; includes touch pad; handy shortcut keys; design suited for tabletop or handheld use.

The bad: Clunky, thick design; less-than-useful secondary display; not customizable, except for OS choice.

The bottom line: The most laptop-like UMPC seen to date, the clamshell Vulcan FlipStart E-1001S offers welcome features including a touch pad, but it’s still not the real-world practical UMPC we’ve been waiting for.

HTC Advantage gets a full review

  • Pros & Cons
  • Conclusion

Now that’s a whole lot that you might need to know about the device. The final verdict as we said earlier is

The new Ameo from T-Mobile is, technically, without a doubt the best Pocket PC ever. Virtually every feature ever seen is included in what is a state of the art device confirming HTC’s status as the premier Windows Mobile manufacturer. T-Mobile has done an excellent job in producing a package for the UK mobile market which could have been perfect with the inclusion of the 4 in 1 cable. From a price perspective T-Mobile are offering the Ameo at a reasonable price scale starting at £429.99 and dropping to £129.99 for the more expensive pay monthly contracts. You get what you pay for.

The only downside to the Ameo is its bulk. Is the Ameo too big for someone looking for a mobile phone sized device? Yes, in my opinion it is. If form factor is top of your requirements list this device is not for you. It’s too large to hold to your ear and the lack of personal speaker makes telephony awkward without a Bluetooth headset. The Ameo excels as a convergence device though that will tick almost all of the boxes for both business users and multimedia fanatics alike. You wouldn’t want it sat in your pocket on a Saturday night out but deciding whether or not to buy the Ameo is a no brainer. It’s THE device of year to date. The tricky part is going to be deciding what your “going out” phone will be!

FlipStart gets a start

Remember the FlipStart, Crave is reporting about the full review of the FlipStart E1001S by PC Mag (we were not able to get to the page mentioned).

The E-1001S flips open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard and a 5.6-inch screen with a 1024×600 resolution. With a Pentium M CPU, a 30GB hard drive, and only 512MB of RAM, it’s probably not going to be your main notebook, but for basic Web-surfing and e-mailing, we’d be willing to give it a shot. Other cool extras include a secondary display on the lid for checking e-mail while the lid is closed, an EVDO antenna, and both a touchpad and pointing stick.

Vulcan was started by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, so the company has a serious technology pedigree. There’s no release date yet, but PC Mag says the E-1001S will go for $1,999.

$2000 seems way too much for this device. Not sure if you agree with us.

Asus R2H gets reviewed by CNET

CNEW reviews the Asus R2H. Compared to other UMPCs that they have reviewed this seem to be getting a better rating.

The R2H did manage to impress us with its decent battery life–usually a weak point for UMPCs. It ran for 3 hours, 41 minutes on our MobileMark battery life test. Both the Samsung Q1 and the Sony VAIO UX50 offered less than 3 hours of battery life on the same test. This is especially impressive given the R2H’s larger screen.
