As we heard, Samsung is ready with its Q1 Ultra to ship this month. The best part comes from the pricing part of it. Samsung has always been the first in this game, Even when the first generation of UMPCs were announced a year back, they were the first to hit the store shelves and even this time.

The biggest compliant about the UMPCs were the price and Samsung seems to have hit the sweet spot. Yes starting just at $799 with the native resolution of 1024 X600.

GottaBeMobile has the full specs compared and the availability of these devices. Here is a sneak peak at it

Entry — $799
Windows XP Tablet on a Intel Ultra Mobile Processor A100 at 600Mhz, 1GB Ram, 40GB HDD, 1024 x 600 native resolution + all the standard features including Wireless LAN and Bluetooth

Better Consumer — $1199
Vista Home Premium on a Intel Ultra Mobile Processor A110 at 800 MHz, 1GB Ram, 60GB HDD, 1024 x 600 native resolution + all the standard features including Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and HSDPA.

Better Commercial — $1499
Vista Business on a Intel Ultra Mobile Processor A110 at 800 MHz, 1GB Ram, 80GB HDD, 1024 x 600 native resolution + all the standard features including Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and HSDPA.

Best — yet to be announced
Vista Business Premium on a Intel Ultra Mobile Processor A110 at 800 MHz, 1GB Ram, 32GB SSD, 1024 x 600 native resolution + all the standard features including Wireless LAN, Bluetooth and HSDPA.

all of these with more than 4.5 hours of battery life, which has been the next biggget issue in UMPCs so far.

Stevy has it, no no not that Stevy — Steve of UMPC Portal. The Samsung Q1 Ultra had wonderful things to say about, when they lunched the product at CeBIT. There is no official word from Samsung on the availability & pricing, but steve says he has it.

Initially it was speculated to be a whopping $2400 and now looks like it is getting the actual price point.

…Samsung have told our contacts that they have now fixed their Q1 roadmap and that the base Q1 Ultra with HSDPA will be offered for 1200 Euro. I’m almost reluctant so say that again because it sounds too good to be true. Especially after all the pricing chaos of earlier today. But as I’ve been assured that this is the final price and 100% conrrect info, I’m going to go out on a limb and say it again.

Q1 Ultra with HSDPA – 1200 Euro. Availability in May 2007 (thats around US $1600)

The design of the product looks very promising. Here are some of the improvements over the previous design

Built in QWERTY keyboard without the sliding or opening of anything.

HSDPA & WiBRO support

They claim it’s around 1.5 lbs which is great & less than 1 inch.

A standard battery that lasts for 4 hrs

6 hrs of battery life with the extended battery

A built in camera

and more accessories

..While some of the specs appear to be identical to the beefed-up Q1P — like the

7-inch touchscreen

1GB of RAM

60GB hard drive

an unknown Intel (not Via) CPU running Vista Home Premium

a 1,024 x 600 WSVGA resolution (no 800 x 600 here)

two digital cameras (1.3 megapixel for “photography” and 0.3 megapixel for videoconferencing)

and a fingerprint scanner

split QWERTY keyboard and

Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi (802.11b/g), HSDPA, and WiBro.

This is a great improvement than what we have had so far. Engadget has more pictures — Samsung Q2 UMPC revealed! [engadget]

Kevin over at jkOnTheRun reports that Samsung has updated the firmware.

First up is the Samsung Battery Manager application. On my Q1, if I click Help, About in the Battery Manager application, Sammy shows me v.2.1.1.8. If you look on the Samsung Q1 download page, however, you see that v.2.2.0.0 is available. Realizing that I should have been a Hollywood Stuntman, I took the risk of downloading and installing the 2.2.0.0 version and sure enough, it’s upgraded on my Q1. Unfortunately typical of many companies that provide software, there’s no listing of features or fixes in this version. (And this is acceptable because…..?)

Looks like there are quite a lot of these UMPCs to choose from, but the Tabletkiosk eo 7100 series, SmartCaddie and the Dreambook are the same. The ECS H70, Founder Mininote, Daewoo Lucoms and the Tabletkiosk eo 7200 series are the same. Taking these in to consideration all we have are 4 models including the Samsung Q1 and the Asus R2H.
