Samsung has big plans

eweek reports that Samsung means business with its Q1.

… Despite a less than warm initial reception for the diminutive PC category by analysts—ultramobile PCs are small, keyboard-less handheld computers capable of running Microsoft’s Windows XP—Samsung said its Q1 UMPC has exceeded its expectations, particularly for businesses.

And now it’s raising the bar.

Samsung, which had not sold a Samsung-brand PC in the United States for several years before the May 2006 launch of the Q1, expects to announce soon at least one deal to sell quantities of the $1,100 UMPC to a corporation.

Meanwhile, depending on the success of the device, its future plans include at least one Q1 follow-on and possibly offering Samsung-brand notebooks again in the United States.

“What we’ve seen is that once people are actually holding a UMPC, they start to see the possibilities. Seeing pictures or reading about it doesn’t do it justice,” said David Nichols, director of product marketing for Samsung Electronics’ Information Technology Division, based in Irvine, Calif.

“Let’s face it. This product in terms of specs doesn’t line up well with some of the more traditional notebooks out here,” he added [...]

UMPC? Sorry, We don’t carry it.

I was so exicted about the availability of Samsung Q1 in Fry’s Electronics. This would be the very first time that I personally would be laying my hands on a UMPC.

Samsung should have gone for a launch training(of some sort) to all the Fry’s Stores. I don’t want to blame Fry’s or anything. I wanted to pick up a Samsung Q1 from Fry’s Electronics. When I asked the Mobile Section Manager - “Hey, I’m lookin for the Samsung Q1 UMPC - Do you know where i can find ‘em?” he goes “UMPC? Sorry we don’t carry it”.

It took me few minutes to explain to him that all the 32 Fry’s Stores were to have this according to Samsung and had to explain how the device looks like and explain it in detail; then he goes “Oh! that small computer thing without a Keyboard! Yes it’s over there”

Samsung Q1 gets a Keyboard in UK

Yes, For those of you who have already bought the Q1 - sorry. From today Samsung announced that Q1 will get a Keyboard along with a carry case(pictured below) at no extra cost. Still not sure if this offer is valid in the US.

q1_bundle.jpg

Samsung is bundling a plug-in keyboard with its pioneering Q1 ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), the company announced today. It fits into a folding case that can also carry the portable.

The ‘organiser bundle’, as the company calls it, is available now at £799 inc VAT – the same as the launch price of the machine without a keyboard.

Mark Jennings, Samsing’s UK notebook business manager, said: ‘The free organiser bundle and additional range of Q1 accessories, in particular our extended battery and power options, builds on consumer demand for flexibility and mobility in computing devices.’

He said sales of the Q1 had already exceeded expectations. The Q1 is the first ultra-mobile built to Microsoft Origami spec to be widely available in the shops. It has full Tablet PC functionality, which means it has viable handwriting recognition and can be used without a keyboard.

But the inclusion of one is a bonus for people who use the machine for heavy bouts of writing.
