Samsung with mixed initial feedback

Looks like Samsung has both negative and positive feedback about its UMPC, but wait looks like the negative is all because of Microsoft’s hype with the Origami Project (atleast according to Samsung) PC World reports…

Feedback from customers who have bought Samsung Electronics’ Q1 device suggests that a pre-launch teaser campaign by Microsoft might have backfired, according to a Samsung executive [...]

“Feedback has been quite mixed,” vice-president of marketing for Samsung’s digital media business, David Steel, said.

A positive or negative response was generally related to how much of the pre-launch Origami hype the person had been exposed to, Steel said.

Over a period of several weeks prior to the platform’s March launch at the Cebit trade show, Microsoft ran a teaser campaign in which it slowly disclosed Origami details. With few specific details released, expectations were quickly raised among IT professionals, bloggers and journalists about what Origami would be. At the same time a price tag of between $US500 and $US1000 for the devices became known [...]

Consumers who had encountered the Q1 with no prior knowledge were generally positive about the device while those who read a lot about the Origami platform prior to seeing the Q1 had been more negative, he said. “Particularly from someone [with prior] understanding of Origami, [they have been] saying ‘We expected this and expected that’ and comparing specification and price with laptop computers,” Steel said.

The war of the Chips

It was INTEL, then VIA and then rumor had it AMD. Samsung might not switch to AMD or VIA for that matter. The only main reason being the price of Intel. Now Bloomberg reports that intel is lowering its price up to 60% (bet this is lower than anything AMD or VIA can offer) and up to 15% on its new Core Duo processors to keep its Market Share.
It was only this week we heard about Samsung’s chances of moving to AMD…

Intel said it will reduce prices of faster dual-core chips by about 15 percent, according to Alex Lin, a product marketing manager at Micro-Star, Taiwan’s third-largest maker of motherboards, which connect electronic parts in computers. Intel also told him that it plans to lower Pentium prices by 60 percent [...]

Q1 Review - Jack of all, master of some!

Oh Thank Samsung, it’s not NONE. It’s been a hard week for us, there were many reviews and some of them were really taking the Q1 down. This review by (Consumer Electonics net) on the other hand seems to be unbaised.

My first impression of the Samsung Q1 was that it was well put together with graceful industrial design, with its shiny piano-black surface immediately reminding me of my black iPod nano. Samsung paid thoughtful attention to the out-of-box-experience with this unit. For example, learning from the problems people had with smudges and scratches on the nano, Samsung thoughtfully included a microfiber polishing cloth from 3M in the package, which proved itself to be handy for wiping off the easily-smudged surface of the Q1. The unit is about the size of the paperback book and weighs a little bit more than a hardcover book, but is a comfortable size for carrying around. However, it’s certainly too big and heavy to be carried in a pocket [...]

It’s a good read, and neverthless it wont hurt to get a clear picture of the Q1 if you are planning to buy one. Read the full review here

Coming Soon: UMPCs with AMD Chips

When Gates announced the prices of UMPCs to be atound $500, we were having high hopes. When the actual first product (UMPC) from Samsung arrived it way too much at $1100. Then there was the TabletKiosk with the Via Chips that was less than a Grand starting at $900. Now comes the interesting part how about UMPCs that are around $700 or less - sounds great right… TMC Net reports that

After seeing the unsatisfactory debut of the world’s first Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC) this spring, Samsung Electronics is planning to sell the next version of the mini PC at a bargain price, starting this fall.

The upcoming UMPC will hit the market around September at a price under 700,000 won, down from over 1.2 million for the initial Q1 model, a company insider said Friday.

To lower the price, Samsung will use CPUs made by AMD instead of expensive Intel chips, the Samsung official said on condition of anonymity. Also, subsidies from KT for its WiBro wireless Internet service contract may help drop the price further, he said [...]
