USB Duet™ from PLX Technology

PLX technology will be demonstrating the USB Duet™ at WinHec 2007. So what does this do? Well this technology will allow your UMPC or computers running Windows XP or Vista to connect directly to other devices via docking or for video sharing.

plx_duet.jpgAsus R2H gets shipped with something similar but not close, the USB sync cable(item 6 on the linked page) lets you connect 2 computers through the standard USB without a need for router or a network. USB Duet will let you share video to another device like an Xbox or use the standard dock for sharing your mouse, keyboard and the monitor.

The demonstrations feature USB Duet - a revolutionary cabling technology allowing computers running the Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems to connect through a standard USB cable — in two applications the technology excels in: video-file sharing and computer docking.

HID drivers for Q1 — Thanks CTitanic

Frank more known as CTitanic has been hinting that he was busy doing something and today he says it all. He has also released the HID drivers for Samsung Q1. If you are wondering why you need those drivers? Get the answer here.

Sometimes it’s sad to read stuff like

I included a readme.txt file with instructions, please follow them. Remember, this is a “AS IS” release, and even when I can guarantee that it works you ARE ON YOUR OWN. Do not count on Samsung for help (these guys are busy making money) and do not bother EETI either (these guys are really busy doing a good job).

Hit those hidden butons — UMPC Scrollbar Utility

The most annoying at least for me was to use the navigation key and guess button that I wanted to click. This happens when the dialog is larger than the display itself. Unless you have an external monitor connected, it’s a hard thing to do. If you’ve experienced what we are talking about, this tool is for you.

Vikram has posted an article on various aspects of screen and resolution on a UMPC. He also has a nifty utility for download (works only on vista) that could get you to hit those hidden buttons.

Vikram just posted an update and it’s now available for XP too - Check it out here

Deepfish — We need’em for UMPCs too

Today Microsoft released the Deepfish for Mobile Devices (Demo here). Note: This is currently available only by invitation.

The Deepfish Technology Preview enhances existing mobile browsing technologies by displaying content in a view that is closer to the desktop experience. Our zoom-able interface and cue map allow you to quickly access the information you care about over the web without ever losing track of where you are…

Some of the second generation of UMPC sport a better resolution than original / first generation UMPCs (800X480) We need Deepfish for UMPCs as well. Not all sites are designed for Mobile, so there has to be a way to get rid of the annoying horizontal scrollbars on the UMPCs and the answer is Deepfish.

What do you think? Will Microsoft make a version for UMPCs?

Vista — To be or Not to be

When we installed Vista on the Asus R2H we did face a lot of issues but that was when Vista was in it’s beta. Now after the launch of Vista a lot of people seem to having varied opinions.

Again, if you are planning on a new computer chances are it would be pre-installed with Vista (most of the drivers and things might just work). But if you are upgrading think again and you may want to keep your Existing OS. Oh speaking of which — if you have bought a Vista Upgrade package, here is a Workaround Discovered For “Clean Install” With Vista Upgrade DVDs.
