Linux on the Q1

There were few, who tried to install vista on the UMPC and were successful to some extend. James point us to a blog where this guy “carsten” has installed linux on the Samsung Q1 and he also explains the full process to us, covering…

  • Basic Installation - preparations
  • Wireless LAN
  • Graphical Interface
  • Last but not least: The Touchscreen
  • The Show Stoppers or What do I need, to use Linux on this gadget as default?
  • What I Didn’t Do
  • The Future

The Only major downside being the fact that the touchscreen could not be used to its full, there is no handwriting recognition tool available for a Linux (yet!).

UPDATE: Steve over at Carrypad has an article on how UMPC devices (he strongly believes Sony’s UX series to be an UMPC) will become popular.

Slowly but surely, UMPC owners are trying Linux on their devices. First we saw John Tokash succesfuly boot Damn Small Linux on the eo/easybook/t700 and we even had some success ourselves with it on the Easybook P7. Then we saw Mozy.org report success with Linux on the Sony UX series and now, Linux on the Samsung Q1. But there are problems. Here we discuss some of the issues and put some questions to Sascha Pallenberg, founder and MD of the VIA-focused Linux distribution epiOS.
