HID drivers for Q1 — Thanks CTitanic

Frank more known as CTitanic has been hinting that he was busy doing something and today he says it all. He has also released the HID drivers for Samsung Q1. If you are wondering why you need those drivers? Get the answer here.

Sometimes it’s sad to read stuff like

I included a readme.txt file with instructions, please follow them. Remember, this is a “AS IS” release, and even when I can guarantee that it works you ARE ON YOUR OWN. Do not count on Samsung for help (these guys are busy making money) and do not bother EETI either (these guys are really busy doing a good job).

Mac OS X on Asus R2H

Yes you read it right. We feel it’s not going to be easy and you might be in great deal of issues. But one of our reader Igor sent us this email.

Today I had too much free time on my hands and didn’t know what to do with it so I picked up my Asus R2H and installed Mac OS X 10.4.7 on it (yes you read it
right). After some try-and-errors I finally managed to install it. Errors during installation were caused by my bad installation DVD. After replacing it the installation went very smooth. The installation process took about 45 minutes. The installation is not designed for 800 x 480 resolution, so you cannot se back and next buttons.

OS boot takes about 1min and 10 sec. UI is pretty slow, but it is not that annoying. This is most annoying Screen calibration is off, Most of the devices don’t work except Bluetooth and LAN. Will try to find as many drivers I can.

Not just the email he had sent us some pictures too.

Asus R2H: Getting the Wireless working on Vista

There has been a lot of people asking about this. I managed to get it working. Here are the simple steps!

  1. Make sure you have at least the Vista Rc1 installed. A lot of drivers might have been installed when Vista does the automatic updates.
  2. For the rest of the drivers you could just use the driver backup CD from Asus
  3. Now for th wireless. Use the backup CD or download it from here and install the “Wireless Lan Driver and Application” Yes, it might install and will refuse to work.
  4. The easy fix. Restart, you’ll be prompted with an error about the “Wireless Lan Driver and Application” - Don’t worry
  5. Go to your Device Center and choose the wireless card and say “update driver” … and browse for the directory that you installed the application. (default being “Program Files > ASUS > WLAN Card Utilities”) Now assuming that you have the original xp untouched, you can browse the directory out there too.
  6. You’ll find a directory within named “Driver”. Choose that and say “OK”
  7. Tada… you have it working.
  8. Now go ahead and uninstall the application (WLAN Card Utilities), you really don’t need it, you can use Windows network manager.

Or the super duper easy way. Download the driver files from here (this is same as the one mentioned above) and get it going. If at all you run in to issues do post them here. I wonder why Asus has bundled the driver in an application.

Playing with Vista on the Asus R2H

So Have you wondered what that “Windows Vista Capable” means? Well according to Microsoft this is what it is!. So I installed the Vista RC1 (I’m still looking for the RC2 but could not get it -any clue?) The install was pretty straight, it was getting all the drivers which was way trickier than I thought.

So you see that R2H easily qualifies what Microsoft demands. Well does it do everything that is expected of it? That’s exactly what we wanted to find out. It takes about an hour to complete the full installation. Believe it or not “Vista is way better than the Windows XP Tablet Version on this device”.

Windows Vista on UMPCs

So looks like Vista should be just fine on the eo, well as expected there were some issues here and there, Thoughtfix has posted the details along with this video.

  • It defaults to 800×600 with no antialiasing. The text is near unreadable until you fix the resolution. The wrong resolution sticks the screen in a flicker until reboot.
  • The XP graphics driver works fine.
  • I couldn’t get the touchscreen to work at all, even after installing the driver.
  • All the wireless LAN driver installs “errored out” saying they must be run on Windows XP or Windows 2000. I even tried installing them in “XP SP2 compatibility mode” and still failed.
