UPDATE: Check out the Video of Mac OS X running on the Asus R2H

Today I had too much free time on my hands and didn’t know what to do with it so I picked up my Asus R2H and installed Mac OS X 10.4.7 on it (yes you read it
right). After some try-and-errors I finally managed to install it. Errors during installation were caused by my bad installation DVD. After replacing it the installation went very smooth. The installation process took about 45 minutes. The installation is not designed for 800 x 480 resolution, so you cannot se back and next buttons.

OS boot takes about 1min and 10 sec. UI is pretty slow, but it is not that annoying. This is most annoying Screen calibration is off, Most of the devices don’t work except Bluetooth and LAN. Will try to find as many drivers I can.

Not just the email he had sent us some pictures too.

Yep, I could hear your saying “this is photoshopped”, but hey it’s not impossible to install Mac OS X on your UMPC

I’ll leave it to you to decide. May be we should run a Contest or something. If you want to install OS X on your UMPC, head over here to detailed instructions and step by step Installation guide.

There has been a lot of people asking about this. I managed to get it working. Here are the simple steps!

Make sure you have at least the Vista Rc1 installed. A lot of drivers might have been installed when Vista does the automatic updates.

For the rest of the drivers you could just use the driver backup CD from Asus

Now for th wireless. Use the backup CD or download it from here and install the “Wireless Lan Driver and Application” Yes, it might install and will refuse to work.

The easy fix. Restart, you’ll be prompted with an error about the “Wireless Lan Driver and Application” – Don’t worry

Go to your Device Center and choose the wireless card and say “update driver” … and browse for the directory that you installed the application. (default being “Program Files > ASUS > WLAN Card Utilities”) Now assuming that you have the original xp untouched, you can browse the directory out there too.

You’ll find a directory within named “Driver”. Choose that and say “OK”

Tada… you have it working.

Now go ahead and uninstall the application (WLAN Card Utilities), you really don’t need it, you can use Windows network manager.

Or the super duper easy way. Download the driver files from here (this is same as the one mentioned above) and get it going. If at all you run in to issues do post them here. I wonder why Asus has bundled the driver in an application.

So Have you wondered what that “Windows Vista Capable” means? Well according to Microsoft this is what it is!. So I installed the Vista RC1 (I’m still looking for the RC2 but could not get it -any clue?) The install was pretty straight, it was getting all the drivers which was way trickier than I thought.

So you see that R2H easily qualifies what Microsoft demands. Well does it do everything that is expected of it? That’s exactly what we wanted to find out. It takes about an hour to complete the full installation. Believe it or not “Vista is way better than the Windows XP Tablet Version on this device”.

Installation:

I’m sure there is going to be a lot of you who will be doing this in the near future on your R2H. So here are some tips to get you started, More detailed step by step instructions coming soon.

Make sure you have a USB DVD Rom or a USB External hard disk or even better just copy the installer on to the R2H using the USB Sync Cable (No.6 in the picture) that shipped with the device. (Note: The Asus R2H comes with 60GB in the US pre-partitioned in FAT 32, you may want to first Quick format the Data drive to NTFS before you start)

Start the installation, Choose the partition (has to be NTFS and it’s a good idea not to choose upgrade; you know its Vista and its not the final release), Enter the serial number and I guess that’s it and Windows Vista Installer will take care of the rest (Tip: Vista installation screen are not designed for 800 X 480 resolution, so you might have to switch to the 1024 X 600 mode to click through the hidden buttons) Take a break, have a coffee.

Once the installation is complete, thats when you realize that there are tones of drivers that needs to be installed and Microsoft was not able to find the drivers. You could use the drivers backup CD provided by Asus to get most of the stuff but not the Wireless LAN (which I guess should be the first thing that you might want)

In short the installation was as easy as few clicks. As I said earlier the most tricky thing was to get all the drivers installed.

CTitanic has posted a step by step process of how to upgrade your HDD on your tabletkiosk eo 7100 series. Not to mention his disclaimer on your comfort level and warranty.

First of all, I need to say that I have been working with PCs professionally for the last 12 years of my life so what could seem easy for me could not be in that way for some of you. In another hand, if you break your eo in the process of upgrading it, you just voided the unit warranty.

Secondly, it’s going to be a lot easier if you select the HDD size that you need right when you place your order at TabletKiosk. That’s my recommendation, lets the experts do the job for you. After all, TabletKiosk is giving you the opportunity to configure your UMPC in the way you want it, something that no other seller is doing at this moment [...]

If you would like to do what he did, it should be pretty simple due to the fact that he has given clear instructions on his article along with pictures to guide you through.
