I recently upgraded a crappy old G4’s graphics card, and it works way better!!

This tablet is not a slow computer, it just has a non-Quartz graphics card.

I installed 10.4.4 on vmWare, and it ran slower than on that UMPC. Except for the graphics; that UMPC displays all frames but
slowly, while on vmWare it ran at normal speed but at 2 FPS.

Are you running it on the battery? Try to run it with the AC adapter. On my PC notebooks, OS X runs fine with the adapter connected, but on the battery it is just as slow as on your Ultra Mobile PC.

No, his discovery wasn’t exactly unearthing the long-awaited Apple tablet from a secret vault in Cupertino, but he did manage to get OS X 10.4.7 up and running on his Asus R2H UMPC. Sure, Peter Green’s home-crafted MKIII (vid after the jump) was svelte in its own homegrown way, but installing Apple’s own operating system on a tried and true Wintel machine is a feat worthy of praise. Although the nitty gritty of the process is scant, Igor notes that he installed OS X “JaS Patched” and also utilized an SSE2 patch to get things moving along; he stated that the installation itself “had no problems,” and was quite simple (albeit time consuming) once things got rolling. Moreover, the only quirks he’s experienced thus far is the inability for OS X to render the 800 x 480 resolution natively, which snips a few precious pixels of desktop space. Overall, we’d say things must be working out fairly well, as he even goes so far as to proclaim OS X as “his only operating system” installed on the UMPC — bravo Igor, bravo. [...]

If anything, it looks as though the programs are running fine, just the quartz animations are slow. 900 mhz should run fine, maybe slow, but not unusable. i had an 800 mhz ibm celeron running JaS ok and it had the same problem. the anim,ations of the dock sucked, but everything else ran ok.

Solution to the slowness (maybe):

Did you remove the TPM kext? I think it’s in /System/Library/Extensions. You wanna reboot into single user by tapping F8 while the machine starts, and editing the arguments for the OS, and adding -s to the end. Then, execute

rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/*TPM*

. This made the OS about 2847368234x more usable on a Pentium III I installed it on. HTH.

A thought: an ultra mobile pc can play full screen movies of the OSX interface and someone can pretend to move the windows around with a stylus.

It actually doesn’t look that slow, the main issue, beyond non-ddr ram and the celeron, is the graphics hardware. Without acceleration for Quartz, OSX certainly run slow on any hardware.

I realize that it is a slow system at 900mhz. Something like the graphics subsystem or something else must be causing it to run so slow. My wife’s 450Mhz G3 iMac runs Tiger 10.4.8 100 times faster than that… Ok 100 is probably exaggerated but it is no where near that slow. That is unusable slow…
